Product Overview
A Disc Filter, also known as a stacked media filter or automatic self-cleaning filter, is a highly efficient and compact filtration system designed for the pre-treatment stage of pure water systems. Its primary purpose is to remove suspended solids, particulate matter, silt, and other microscopic contaminants from the feed water. By providing reliable protection for downstream equipment such as Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes and ion exchange resins, disc filters are a critical component in ensuring the efficiency and longevity of a complete pure water treatment train.
Working Principle
The core of the disc filter is a stack of precision-engineered polypropylene discs. Each disc has a specific pattern of grooves and traps on both sides.
  • Filtration Cycle: During the filtration mode, water flows from the outside of the disc stack towards the inner core. The suspended particles are trapped on the surface of the discs or within the intricate network of grooves. The clarified water passes through and collects in the central manifold, exiting the filter as clean effluent.
  • Backwash Cycle: When the differential pressure across the disc stack (due to accumulated solids) reaches a pre-set value (typically 0.5 - 1.0 bar), the system automatically initiates a backwash cycle. No external water source is required. The controller opens a drain valve, and a hydraulic mechanism within the filter slightly expands the disc pack. A powerful reverse flow of the filtered water is released from the central core outwards, scouring the discs, rotating them, and flushing the trapped solids to the drain. This process is rapid, lasting only 10-30 seconds, and does not interrupt the main flow in multi-unit systems.
Main Components
  • Filter Vessel (Body): Typically constructed from reinforced polypropylene (FRPP), stainless steel (SS304/SS316L), or other corrosion-resistant materials.
  • Disc Stacks (Filter Elements): The heart of the system. Made from high-quality, durable polypropylene (PP) in various filtration ratings (e.g., 5μm to 200μm). Multiple stacks are housed within a single vessel.
  • Central Manifold / Collecting Pipe: Gathers the filtered water from each disc stack and directs it to the outlet.
  • Backwash Mechanism: A piston or spring assembly that controls the compression and expansion of the disc stacks during filtration and backwash cycles.
  • Control System: Can be a simple mechanical timer/pressure differential controller or a sophisticated PLC-based unit. It automates the backwash sequence based on time or pressure drop.
  • Inlet/Outlet & Drain Valves: Multi-port valves or individual solenoid valves that direct the flow paths for filtration and backwashing.
